The Paintings of J.M. Deaton

I like to call myself a "self-taught" artist but the truth be known, my wife (she

has an MFA in fine arts) noticed that I had an eye for color. She encouraged me

to take up the paint brush and see what I could do. With her know-how and my

desire to create art (making art is a little contagious) I have progressed from

ACEO cards to actual canvas painting (I still like to slap the brush onto

watercolor paper every now and then).

I have a true appreciation for color, especially the color that surrounds us in

nature. The intensity of drama that sunlight plays across surfaces. I love to be

outdoors (I was raised in the country) so gazing out into the distance across a

corn field or pasture was very common place when I was a boy. The grandeur

of those horizons at the opening or closing of the day left a lasting impression

upon my memory. These impressions are now manifesting themselves in my

paintings. I hope you all enjoy the color show.
