Folk art and Folk music have been a part of my family heritage for generations. My people all came from the hollers of Eastern Kentucky. My relations were bluegrass singers, wood carvers, quilters, and such. My great-grandfather was a moon shiner with a home-made still that he kept hid among the brush up in his neck of the woods. My grandfather told tales of the revenuers scouring the hillsides looking for stills to bust up and the ways his dad out foxed "them revs". My great-grandmother was akin to keeping a jug of moonshine, hid in the flour bin, for medicinal purposes (an every night necessity from my understanding!). My miniature face jugs enable me to maintain a humorous connection with my family's colorful past and to carry a part of my family's folk art heritage into the future. I hope my face jugs bring a twinkle to your eye and a grin to your mouth! All jugs are coil built with a slab bottom and all facial features are uniquely hand sculpted. The handle is pulled in the traditional manner. The jug is made with air dry clay and the surface is painted with watercolor and coated with clear gloss varnish. Each face jug is the only one of its kind! |
